If you are a woman aged 50+, make no mistake about it, weights are your friend. If like me you are also that deathly combination of being both busy and lazy, then weights are even more your top buddy. At 50+, our bone density, muscle tone and metabolism are all declining. But we can reverse those declines by working out with weights. So there’s a three for one benefit for starters – smart use of your time.
Actually, it’s more than that when you count the physical and mental health benefits. Feel physically stronger and you will feel mentally stronger too. And it’s fun. So that’s six benefits for the price of one exercise. Blimey. Why wouldn’t you want a piece of that?
I think my weight training sessions are my favourite part of the week right now.

Now that’s settled, since we’re in the gym, do you like my new gear? I was so chuffed when Adidas approached me because I already wear their stuff most days (looking at you, Stan Smith trainers). Adidas sent me a gift card and from there it was up to me to choose whatever would fit with my lifestyle from the training clothing section. And by the time I came to choose, the sale was on, so I put some of my own money to it and got kitted out for the rest of the year.

Here’s what I chose from Adidas, what do you think?
Adidas by Stella McCartney Support Core Tank Top
Formotion Sculpt Two Tone Tights

I feel like such a badass in these! Especially love the curved, shiny strip on the top and the patterning around the tights. Also the fact that they’re both made from 60% recycled materials. Both come up on the small side, but the tights are very stretchy so I went for a medium in them and a large in the Stella top.

Shoes were a real score in the sale – they’re ZX 2K Flux shoes, currently reduced by 50%. They’re much more of an orangey red in real life and very comfortable and springy for treadmill running.

My second outfit consists of an Adidas Winners 2.0 T-shirt (currently 30% off in the sale) and an Adidas WinnAdidas Designed to Move Aeroready Leopard Print 7/8 Leggings (20% off). Both of these are mediums, which I guess is around a size 12.

There’s a big range of sizes from XS up to 4XL, with the plus size range actually shown on plus size women so you get a proper sense of how it might fit. The leggings are clearly designed for taller women than me (I’m slightly under 5’4″) so they’re slightly loose but still fit well.

I guess the big question I want to leave you with, especially if you’re reading this and you’re a woman aged 50+ (or any age) – would you give weights a go? Would you try weightlifting and see how you get on? You might need a bit of help to get started from a class, a trainer or some Youtube videos, but it’s really not hard to pick up. Your mind and body will only ever say thank you. And also occasionally Ouch.
