Be yourself in the gym, everyone else is already taken

adidas red and black leggings

Let’s talk about gym leggings!

#GIFTED #CREATEDWITHADIDAS

Recently I’ve been listening to the podcast Fashion Neurosis, where designer Bella Freud talks to guests about what they wear and what that means on a deeper level.

This led me to realise that what I wear in the gym is pretty much the exact opposite to what I wear in real life. Everything’s a lot more fitted and colourful than the clothes I tend to walk down the street in.

For example, right now my favourite gym leggings are these red and black ones. Guaranteed to make anybody feel like a superhero:

This is what they look like on somebody who is neither young nor tall (ie me):

I do feel like an absolute badass in these. They’re high waisted and well-fitted but not too thin, making them fantastically squat proof. They help me keep my dignity when doing the heavy lifts.

And BTW if you’re feeling tempted, these babies are 50% off in the Summer sale right now.

The whole point of wearing form-fitting clothes when you’re exercising is so that you can see how your body and muscles are moving and check that your position is correct so you’re not in danger of hurting your back or knees.

But you absolutely do not have to wear close fitting clothes in the gym if you’re just not comfortable with that sort of thing. Go for a looser fit like a hoodie or a loose unisex t-shirt if that’s what you prefer.

And wear it with pride. Wear whatever makes you feel like your own personal brand of badass superhero. Because you are a superhero, just by being there.

If you can move in it and you feel good in it, that’s what counts. Beyond that, absolutely nobody is going to judge you or even notice. Everybody’s too busy doing their own thing in the gym, being in their own head and walking their own path.

Wear what you like. Be yourself, feel proud, stand tall and move.

What will you be wearing in the gym this week?
