Shower gel with mushrooms! I know! And there’s a matching body lotion too. Don’t worry, it won’t make you smell of fungus. Not today, shroom.
These are the latest offerings from Shea Moisture. We first looked at Shea Moisture a year ago, when I tried out the frizz fighting hair range. Since then its star seems to have risen a lot. I keep seeing it being mentioned, most recently in an interview Sali Hughes did with Sharmadean Reid. They both raved about it too.
If you haven’t encountered this range before, Shea Moisture is a heritage brand dating back to 1912. It was started by a widowed teenage mum who sold home made hair products in Sierra Leone. The company is still family owned and operated, with the products now being made in the USA.
It’s a very natural brand, with no sulphates, no parabens, no phthalates, no paraffin, no mineral oil, no synthetic colour and no petrolatum. Some (though not all) ingredients are organic and fair trade, and the range is cruelty free.
Plus, they have mushrooms. I’ve been trying out two products from the Shea Moisture Coconut & Hibiscus range: Illuminating Body Wash & Illuminating Body Lotion. The scent of these is a really lovely sweet, floral mix. I didn’t notice much in the way of illumination, but I did find both to be great moisturizers. If you have very dry skin then this is for you. The body lotion is quite thick in texture so it needs a bit of massaging into the skin, but then it left it hydrated all day. The slightly tropical fragrance doesn’t linger but the hydrating power does.
And that secret ingredient? Songyi, or pine mushrooms have a long history of use in natural skincare, especially for brightening the skin. You might never have rubbed a mushroom into your face, but Illuminati all through the ages have been giving it a go.
