Dr Botanicals Lemon Rescue Butter – or Lemon Superfood All-In One Rescue Butter, to give it its full-on, chewy title – is a citrus-scented multi-tasker for your vegan bathroom.
In better times, this would be a good travel pick since the small 50ml tube can be applied to any number of situations. You can use it as lip balm or cracked skin repairer or body moisturiser and even cleanser. Hence it was named winner of the 2020 Beauty Shortlist award for Best Multi-Tasking Balm/Ointment/Butter.
It definitely doesn’t stint on the lemonyness, with a fragrance that steams in like a bag of lemon sherbet sweets. Fragrance-wise, you get a big hit of lemon, which soon settles down into something much gentler. The danger with lemony products is that they can end up being too reminiscent of washing up liquid, but this product thankfully manages to avoid that. I wouldn’t recommend spreading it on your toast, but it kind of smells like you could. And despite the name, it’s not especially buttery. The texture is more like that of a thick cream rather than an oily butter.
I had my doubts about using this as a cleanser because lemon seems a bit harsh for the face. However, it’s not actual lemon juice in there, but rather lemongrass oil which is somewhat kinder to the skin. Still, I prefer to use it as a hand and body moisturiser.
Other star ingredients in the 96% natural formulation include: Coconut oil (for moisturising) and Almond oil (for added vitamins and nourishing minerals).
Dr Botanicals is a reasonably new, London-based brand; certified by PETA brand for their cruelty-free, 100% vegan skincare.
This is the kind of multi-tasking product that’s handy to have around. It sinks into the skin very quickly and moisturises well without greasiness. If you like lemons, well, I was going to say that this could be your jam but maybe lemon curd is more accurate.
