I’ve recently been trying out a new range of brightening skincare which was sent to me by the London-based brand Skin Chemists.
We’ve had a shufti at this brand before, though not for a few years. They’ve always been very big on innovative ingredients, and though their prices can start off steep, they usually have decent special offers which are worth checking out.
There are three products in this brightening range, all very affordable (nothing over £20) and packaged in satisfyingly chunky 250ml bottles. Micellar Water acts as a first cleanse; Toner balances and hydrates the skin and the Lotion nourishes and softens.
Nia-what?
When it comes to brightening skincare, the ingredient you need to look out for is Niacinamide, also known as Vitamin B3. It’s a water-soluble vitamin that helps skin in many ways. Niacinamide works well in conjunction with other ingredients so you should have no problem layering it with, for example a retinol or an acid. It’s particularly helpful for dry and ageing skin and reducing the appearance of enlarged pores. This is a real hero ingredient so make sure it’s there in some form in your daily skincare routine.
All of the products in Skin Chemists’ brightening skincare range include Niacinamide. Other stand-outs include Provitamin B4 and Vitamin C. If I had to choose one then I think I like the toner best of all. It’s got a thicker consistency than your average toner, includes Sweet Almond Oil for nourishment and is applied by patting gently on to the face.
I found that all three products were very comfortable to use – no irritation or redness at all. The brightening effect was noticeable from the start and I imagine would increase with use. Although this range is probably going to be of most use to mature skin, it’s a good all rounder that many people would benefit from.
